Protecting Your Work from AI Training

As AI technologies like large language models (LLMs) continue to evolve, many companies—including Meta (Facebook)—have trained systems on datasets that included books and other written works, often without the permission of authors or publishers.

Totally Entwined Group supports your right to control how your intellectual property is used.

Author AI Protection Resource

We are pleased to offer our authors and the wider writing community a free tool to help protect your work from unauthorised AI training use.

This facility includes:

  • A downloadable opt-out letter template
  • An auto-generated form to help you customise your request
  • International guidance for UK, US, Canada, Australia, and EU authors
  • A list of AI companies to contact

We are also sending an official letter on behalf of all Totally Entwined Group authors to major AI companies, as well as Meta, asserting copyright protections and requesting full opt-out from AI training datasets.

Feel free to share this page with any independent or traditionally published authors who may benefit from the resources here.

International Author Advice

AI training practices affect authors worldwide. The international guidance provided here is current to the best of our knowledge but may not be complete or reflect the most recent legal developments. Please check the latest information or consult legal counsel if needed. Here’s what you need to know by region:

United Kingdom

The UK Government has rejected proposals for unrestricted AI text/data mining. You have strong copyright protections and can assert your rights through opt-out letters.

United States

Copyright is protected, but some companies claim AI training is "fair use." The Authors Guild is challenging this in court. Sending a formal opt-out helps protect your position.

Canada

Canadian copyright law is similar to UK/US. No formal rulings on AI yet. Assert your rights through an opt-out letter to AI developers.

Australia

Australia has yet to pass specific legislation around generative AI and copyright, but general copyright protections apply. Opt-out letters are advisable.

European Union

The EU AI Act will soon require companies to disclose copyrighted content in AI training sets. Until then, you can still request exclusion and assert your rights.
